Sunday was the first time the 13-year-old rape victim’s mentally unsound father had come to meet her. He had even fed her with his own hands. Her father had been in a state of shock over the turn of events and had not been able to meet her.
Less than 24 hours later, the girl — unable to bear the constant humiliation meted out to her by her ward mates at AIIMS — allegedly attempted suicide for the third time by consuming a cocktail of medicines early Monday morning, her mother claimed.
On March 15, the 13-year-old had stepped out of her east Delhi home with her 10-year-old brother to buy medicines for her father when she was kidnapped and subsequently gang-raped.
Apart from a mentally unsound father and a mother who works as a domestic help, the 13-year-old has two younger brothers and en elder sister. Her mother toils hard to make both ends meet.
“My two sons go to school but daughters stay at home. My eldest daughter is Class V dropout but the younger daughter never went to school. As I would go out in the morning for work, my daughters looked after their father and took care of their brothers,” said the mother.
“I just want my daughter to recover soon and we want justice. I want the guilty to be punished severely,” said the mother.
The girl, who was in the general ward earlier, was shifted to the psychiatric ward on Tuesday afternoon. “She has been shifted to a different ward and has been given a separate room. She is not allowed to meet her relatives,” the mother rued.
Meanwhile, one of the representatives of the NGO, which had done the girl’s counselling, was not allowed to meet the girl on Monday. “The girl was shifted to AIIMS on our intervention. But when one of our counsellors went to meet the girl in the hospital, she was barred from entering. We’ll talk to the hospital authorities on Tuesday and do the needful,” the NGO said.
