Terming the incident unfortunate and shameful, Dr Agrawal said that to cover up their corrupt ways exposed by the media, GDA officials resisted and even thrashed media persons.

Raising the issue in the council, MLC Dr YD Singh said the incident raised questions over the credibility of GDA officials. He also expressed concern over increasing incidents of assault over journalists and demanded to ensure their security and let them expose corruption in government departments.

Meanwhile, activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav at the court crossing and said the attack on a pillar of democracy was condemnable.

They further said that GDA officials were hand in glove with land mafia. Quoting example of spokesperson of the party KP Chaudhary, they said GDA officials connived with land mafia to grab Chaudhary’s land at Jungle Saligram and police did not register any FIR against the miscreants.

Members of the District Congress Committee staged dharna at divisional commissioner’s office to express anger on the issue. State secretary of the party Singesh Devi, Paramdev Vishwakarma and others said mafia was ruling the State and no body was safe. They handed over a memorandum to additional commissioner V Shastri and demanded stringent action against the GDA employees.

Cabinet Minister Harishanker Tiwari also condemned the attack on media persons and assured that no one would be allowed to harass them.
