The sun has risen over a crucial partnership in Asia-Pacific

With reference to the report India, Japan to improve nuclear ties (December 30), increasing Japan-India engagement is good news for the Asia- Pacific region. During his visit, Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda pledged the potential sale of civilian nuclear technology to India. The two countries have also held their first trilateral dialogue with the US to shore up their strategic needs in the region.

We can still make it work
With reference to the editorial Learn to walk before running (Our Take, December 31), the whole country wants an effective lokpal and an autonomous CBI to tackle corruption. The UPA wants a showpiece lokpal with absolute control over its appointment and removal. The government could have made history by creating an empowered lokpal to end the country’s 43-year wait for a corruption ombudsman. It still has a chance.

We can still make it work
The successful enactment of the Lokpal Bill is still a possibility. Had Team Anna members been somewhat more reasonable, and the government engaged prudent political managers to sort out the issue, the result would have been different. Both sides need to shun ego and hype to enact an effective Lokpal Bill by March.

Peace in pieces as usual
This refers to the report Pak troops fire at BSF patrol, violate ceasefire (December 31). If Pakistan keeps violating the ceasefire to push terrorists into India, then the possibility of peaceful relations between the two countries is unlikely to materialise anytime soon.
