Former Pakistani skipper Mushtaq Mohammed has a simple advice for Inzamam-ul Haq for the India tour — be a leader and not just a captain.

Mushtaq, regarded as one of the shrewdest Pakistani captains ever, has urged the current skipper to lead by example on the tour which he said would be a litmus test for him.

"Wake up Inzamam, come at No 3 or 4 and take the responsibility. Be a leader, not simply a captain," advised Mushtaq to the burly Multan batsman.

"The boys are looking at you. The odds are heavily against your team. Only you can lift the spirits and morale of the team and for that you will have to lead from the front and by example," he told PTI on Wednesday.

Inzamam, often accused of being an ineffective captain, suffered the ignominy of seeing his team go down 0-3 to Australia in the recent Test series which led to calls for his head ahead of the India tour.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board reposed its faith in him for the all-important series beginning early next month and comprising three Tests and six One-Day Internationals.
