IF THE Lakme Fashion Week began with Bollywood stars dressing up, then the next two days saw models dressing down. After Carol Gracias' top came undone, Gauhar Khan turned the other cheek as her zipper came apart. More models spilled out of their dresses.
When Garcias was putting on the golden halter top, she would not have realised that she was just two minutes away from a Janet Jackson-like episode. As wardrobe malfunction's Indian edition happened, designer Bennu Sahgall's ornate coats and shoulder tunics were all but forgotten. Beige was out, skin was in.
Garcias was walking the ramp for Sahgall's debut appearance at LFW when the tiny strings that kept her dress in place came loose. This particular show was not in the agenda. For a moment, the long-legged beauty froze. But then with professional poise, she pulled up her dress, and gathering it with her hands, sashayed down — as though it was just another way to hold the top. The end was not in sight.
On Thursday evening, Khan was walking the runway for Lascelle Symons when her black gown tore from the zipper, leaving her back exposed to the audience.
She pulled herself and the dress together, but by then the damage had been done.
There was more of fashion unzipped. At the Suneet Varma show, Icelandic model Tinna gave the front rowers yet another in-your-face moment. In the same show, Jesse Randhawa, the original perpetrator of the historic nip-slip some fashion weeks ago, just about managed to pull her bodysuit together to prevent a re-take.
When Garcias' halter top came down, choreographers went to town saying, "It happens at every fashion week in the world." But some wondered if clothes have become the casualty with designers spending more time deciding which fashion week they should attend — Delhi or Mumbai. Moral of the day: when the designer puts together in haste, the model will repent at leisure.
