Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Capt Amarinder Singh declared on Saturday that his party would win more than 75 seats in the January 30 elections.
Addressing a major rally at Baba Mann Singh Sports Stadium in favour of Congress candidate Mahesh Inder Singh Badal, who is taking on his cousin and chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on home turf, Amarinder said, “Badalaan da boria-bistra gol ho jawega, lok ehna da safaya kar denge (The Badals will be sent packing. The people will wipe them out).”
Urging the crowd, he said, “You have given so many chances to Parkash Singh Badal. Try this man (Mahesh Inder) now, who is honest and reliable.”
Questioning the Akali-BJP government’s claims, Amarinder said, “The photos of bullet trains in the advertisements are actually taken from Japan, and the skyscrapers’ images are from Manhattan (US). We want a prosperous Punjab.”
Senior Congress leader Jagmeet Singh Brar, who has been at loggerheads with Amarinder in the past, was all praise for his colleague on Saturday, describing him as “Punjabiyan de dilan di dhadkan (the heartbeat of Punjabis)”.
Later in the day, Amarinder addressed public meetings in favour of party candidates Ajit Singh Shant at Nihal Singh Wala, Ajaib Singh Bhatti (Goniana), Jeet Mohinder Sidhu (Talwandi Sabo) and Gurpreet Kangar (Rampura Phul).
At Rampura Phul, just 6 km from the royal family’s native village of Mehraj, Amarinder ended his campaign with a rally at the old grain market.
