A section of patients admitted in Kalyani ESI Hospital in Nadia district observed a token hunger strike on Sunday to protest against alleged low quality diet and ill behaviour of some doctors and nurses.

The agitating patients said they have decided not to take food before dinner on Sunday.

Subhendu Ghosh, a patient, said, "The food served to us is unworthy even for a dog. We have asked the authorities to test it."

Raju Kumar Sona, another patient, said a section of the doctors and nurses behaved very badly with patients.

Amitava Saha, the hospital Super said he had not received any written complaint "but will look into the allegation of low quality food."

Kalyani SDO Saibal Chakraborty and SDPO Chandrasekhar Bardhan went to the hospital after knowing about the hunger strike by the patient.

Chakraborty said, "The quality of food is really low. I have asked the super to look into it besides the allegation of misbehaviour by doctors and nurses."

Sources in the hospital said the hike in commodities led to low quality food being served to patients.

The government has granted Rs 53 for food for a patient a day.
