However, they are waiting to get details of the exact number of US dollars stolen.
Shitiz Gupta left for Lucknow on December 31. On returning to Kanpur on January 2, he found his house robbed and the US dollars missing.
The matter was broughtto the notice of police on Tuesday.
The police appear a bit confused as some officials were found saying that keeping of any kind of foreign currency at home is crime, while others were of the view that storage of foreign currency depended on the mode of visa.
SP West Awdhesh Kumar Singh said, “Police could only decide the legality or illegality of keeping foreign currency at home after the recovery of the stolen notes. We are working towards that end. We will ascertain the charge only after knowing the amount whether it is a matter of violation of Foreign Exchange Regulatory Act (FEMA) or not. As of now, we can’t reach any conclusion,” he added.
But sources at Kakadev police station said that Shitiz Gupta was being queried about the number of stolen dollars and he had been giving conflicting information that was making the probe difficult.
