WHO honours Indian doctor

Professor Rama Kant has been involved in anti-tobacco activities with a number of anti-tobacco organisations.

An Indian doctor is among the recipients of the World Health Organisation's awards for contributing to the area of tobacco control.

The Indian, Professor Rama Kant, is a surgeon and has been involved in anti-tobacco activities with a number of anti-tobacco organisations, a WHO release said on Tuesday.

Among the other awardees are Indonesian Heart Foundation, Dr Nyo Nyo Kyaing from Myanmar, and Sanchal Tulabordee from Thailand, it said.

Director General's special award has gone to professor Nurul Islam of Bangladesh while the second special award has gone to Dr Gines Gonzalez Garcia, Minister of Health, Argentina.

World Health Organisation gives public recognition to eminent people working in the field of tobacco control each year on the occasion of the `World No Tobacco Day'.
