It is incredulous that 1,432 unauthorised colonies in the city will be regularised (Free for all in illegal colonies, January 16). After all the brouhaha, the message seems to be that the law can be easily side-stepped, especially for pursuing vote-bank politics.

The Court should take the executive to task for selective demolitions in the capital, which were stopped until the court’s orders. The Delhi High Court should now issue orders for the prosecution of officers and authorities under whose jurisdiction illegal structures and rampant violation of laws have continued unabated.

Save pilgrims’ lives
The Haj stampede has become a routine event. It is fair to say that the stoning ritual is fraught with risk, but an efficient crowd management can save many lives. Moments of frenzy cannot be allowed to get the better of religious fervour. After all, human lives are more valuable than any ritual.

Gone with Gayatri
The Gayatri Mantra is a Sanskrit mantra with scientific base whose meaning has been spelt out by learned men and women from time immemorial (Om’s the word, January 14). It will be better for Khushwant Singh to leave this futile exercise and concentrate on other burning issues. No new connotation is required to be added or deleted from its meaning.

Grammar dudes
Bhaskar Ghose rightly projects the changing rules of English grammar among the youth (This is how they, like, talk, January 14). It is important to realise that there needs to exist some sort of conjunction between colloquial and grammatical English. It is all very well for a language to evolve, but it is despicable that the fundamentals of the language be altered, rather mauled, beyond recognition by today’s youth.
