District magistrate RN Tripathi has now convened a meeting on Tuesday to sort out the compensation being demanded by the farmers for their land acquired by the LDA for its (Bhag III) Kanpur Road Housing Scheme. The decision was communicated by an administration official to a group of 200-300 farmers that had gathered near the Law Institute on Sunday to press their demand.

“Though we have been raising the demand from time to time with both the LDA and the administration, but neither of them paid any heed to us. So we decided to stall all development activity, including ongoing construction work on the CM’s law institute, to draw the attention of the authorities towards our demand,” said Ramesh Ranjan of the Kisan Union Sangharsh Samiti.

The project, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on October 12 last year, ran into rough weather about 10 days back when construction work on it was stopped by a group of agitated farmers.

“We were given compensation calculated on Re 1.72 per square feet of our acquired land by the LDA about two decades back. But since the amount was peanuts, we challenged the decision in the High Court, which fixed a land compensation rate of Rs 4.50 per square feet,” said Ramesh.

“The administration officer told us that the authorities were now willing to pay them compensation at Rs 3.50, but they will also make us sign a bond not to challenge the decision in the court,” he said.

“But we will not sign any bond in this connection,” he said. He said the LDA had moved an appeal in the Supreme Court against the enhanced compensation awarded by the High Court, but the former endorsed the lower court’s ruling in the matter.
