In a shocking incident, a twenty-five year old married woman was abducted from Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology, Hinjewadi on Thursday noon and gang raped till late on Thursday night. Two local youths have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The woman, who is still in trauma, has been admitted to a government hospital, she came to India from the US about a month back. She went to a company in Hinjewadi for an interview. After completing the formalities at the firm, she hired a share-a taxi at Hinjewadi to go to Bhandarkar road, where she was supposed to attend a seminar.
While registering the complaint and taking down the statement of the victim, Hinjewadi police said that Ganesh Uttam Kambale and Ranjit Shahaji Gade were sitting in the cab, which was hired by the woman. Afterwards, they were joined by one Subhash Hiralal Bhosale during the journey, on their way to Bhandarkar road, which is almost 20 kms away from Hinjewadi.
Hinjewadi police said that Kambale, who was driving the cab said that the vehicle had developed a snag and took the it to some isolated place. The woman was raped there. Police suspect involvement of more people in the incident.
Bhosale, whose name cropped up in the investigation and has a criminal background, is absconding.
The woman came to the Hinjewadi police station at midnight and narrated the incident. Police immediately swung into action, took her to the hospital while another team proceeded to nearby Maan village to nab the suspects. Two people were picked up from their houses in the morning.
The incident has sent shockwaves since there are several IT companies in Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology Park and several women employees work in odd hours.
In last October, Nayna Pujari, a software engineer, was raped and murdered. A security guard, a cab driver and three others were arrested in the Pujari murder case. Her body was found at Rajgurunagar, 60 kms away from Pune.
The city has in the past witnessed increasing number of crimes against women working in this field after the boom in Information Technology as well as call center business.
In August, 2009, software firm employee Shraddha Chhajed was murdered by her colleague and on November 3, 2007, Jyotikumari Chowdhary, a 22-year-old employee of Wipro call center, was raped and murdered by the firm’s driver and his friend, near Gahuinje village off Mumbai-Pune expressway.
After the incidents, IT companies have made the presence of a security guard mandatory in the cabs.
