The woman, whose mouth was ripped apart, was passing a makeshift colony of gypsies near Poanta Sahib, 175 km from Shimla, when she began talking to someone and chewed on what she thought was a sweet.
To her horror, it turned out to be a homemade explosive used by gypsies to hunt wild animals.
Three men have been arrested for questioning.
