An upper caste college lecturer was strangled to death here by her brother for marrying a man belonging to a lower caste, police said on Wednesday.

The incident came to light after the woman’s roommate found the body on her return from Kochi, police sources said.

The brother came to the victim’s residence at around 11pm on Tuesday in a drunk state, locked her inside a room and berated her over the marriage and then strangulated her, the sources said. The victim’s grandmother, who was staying with her, and her family knew about her husband, they said.

The woman's husband, a Dalit, said he had known her for seven years and they had got married at the sub-registrar's office here on November 23 last.

"We tried in vain to convince our family to perform a marriage as per traditions", he said.

The husband, an assistant physical education director at Tumkur University, said they were living separately. "I stay in Tumkur while my wife, who worked in Chamarajanagar, lived here. I came to know about the murder from her friend".

A search is on to nab the brother, sources added.
