A woman aspiring to contest the Bihar assembly polls has sold her gold necklace to buy an application form for the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) party ticket.

Vidhya Kumari Roy, a staunch supporter of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad's RJD and a party leader in her own right, says she sold a gold ornament to be able to apply for the party ticket.

The RJD has lowered the fee for applying for the party ticket to Rs 2,500 from Rs 5,000 ($115). For dalits, it has reduced the amount from Rs 2,500 to Rs 1,250.

Roy, who wants to contest the Hajipur seat from Vaishali district, says she does not regret risking her money.

"During the last assembly elections, too, I sold my gold ornaments to apply for the party ticket but was denied it," she said.

A senior RJD leader said there was a high demand for the RJD ticket to contest the assembly elections, scheduled to begin from Feb 3. Over 2,500 application forms have been sold, he added.
