Villagers even invited a local television crew to tape the act. In shock after the ‘punishment’ meted out to her, the victim consumed poison. She was rushed to hospital and survived.

The police said two persons have been arrested in the case while five more are at large.

According to police sources, the woman had gone away from the village with her nephew for 15 days. When they returned, a meeting was convened and the village leaders asked her to pay a fine of Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000. When she expressed helplessness to pay the amount, the villagers came up with the ‘punishment’.

The incident comes just days after a woman in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was paraded naked after her son was found with a girl from a different caste.
