WITH A view to expanding mental health services in the state, the Health and Medical Education Department is going to organise a workshop on May 6 at Bhopal.
State Health Minister Ajay Vishnoi will inaugurate the workshop at Hotel Ashoka Lake View. Health Department Principal Secretary and Chairman of the State Mental Health Authority M M Upadhyaya informed that the workshop will discuss the Mental Health Act 1987 to ensure smooth conduct of mental health services.
The workshop aims at allaying misconceptions about mental health and to enhance awareness about the various programmes being implemented in this regard.
Eminent experts from NIMHAS, Bangalore and AIIMS, New Delhi will deliver lectures at the workshop. Other experts from the state have also been invited.
Upadhyaya hoped that the workshop would go a long way in providing better medical and rehabilitation facilities to the mentally sick persons.
Dr R N Sahu, head of Psychiatry Department Gandhi Medical College and Secretary of the Organising Committee said that, according to a study conducted by the World Health Organisation, mental sickness is almost equally distributed in all the countries of the world.
The average of mental sickness is 58.2 per thousand. Madhya Pradesh lacks qualified experts for treatment of these persons.
Dr Sahu informed that the workshop would also deliberate upon matters related to launch of PG Course in Psychiatrics, training to medical officers, starting district mental health centres, implementation of national mental health
programmes and providing better resources to the psychiatrists in the state.
