The incident took place in the Maliwara area of Ghaziabad city, police officials said on Sunday.

As the streets filled up with people, rejoicing and bursting crackers, Sunil Tygai fired several shots with his licenced double-barrel gun.

“Unfortunately, the splinters from his shots hit a woman

and a minor boy who were immediately rushed to a private hospital. The locals informed us about the incident,” superintendent of police (SP) JK Shahi told Hindustan Times.

The two injured were Meera Devi, 47, and Amit Kumar, 19. The conditions of both are stable and they are out of danger.

The police later seized Tyagi’s gun and arrested him on charges of attempt to murder and under the provisions of the Arms Act.

“Tyagi is a local goon and does not have a clean record. We have received a number of complaints against him from the locals and have booked him under stringent sections,” the SP added.
