Going red over national BJP vice-president Prabhat Jha's comment that only rich eat tomatoes, the Congress party workers on Wednesday burnt his effigy and raised slogans.
Members of Madhya Pradesh Rajiv Vikas Kendra, an outfit of the Congress party, alleged that his comment is an insult to the poor. "This way, he is also raising a question over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claim to check inflation," Kendra chief Devendra Yadav said.
The demonstration which continued for over half-an-hour saw sloganeers raise placards which questioned Modi's pre-Lok Sabha election rhetoric, "Acche din aane wale hain." (Good days are ahead)
Jha, while talking to the media in Bhopal on Tuesday, had said people with red cheeks eat tomatoes, hinting that people who are rich consume the vegetable and therefore its price rise should not concern common people.
Apparently, this is the third protest over vegetables in the last fortnight from national to local level. The opposition parties in New Delhi protested against steep rise in vegetable prices charging BJP-led union government with making onions, tomatoes out of bounds for common man.
In Indore, district administration has launched a campaign to uproot vegetables that grow along city's sewage carrying nullahs which are a threat to public health. Amidst the ongoing hue and cry raised over diseases caused due to consuming vegetables irrigated by polluted nullah water, came Prabhat Jha's comment.
