The common-user domestic air cargo terminal will make it easier for companies in the region to ship goods, especially perishable goods, to other parts of the country.

Companies operating in pharmaceutical and food processing sectors are expected to benefit the most from the facility, industry sources said.

A portion of the old terminal building, about 500 square metres, has been earmarked for the cargo terminal. As per rough estimates, the terminal would handle about 20-22 tonnes of cargo daily.

GSEC Ltd will pay a fixed license fee in addition to utility charges and royalty, as applicable.

The domestic air cargo facility has been a long-pending demand of many airlines and industrial units of Indore and surrounding areas.

Earlier, only Jet Airways provided the facility of air cargo from Indore but with involvement of other airlines, the delivery service will be much faster.

Meanwhile, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has selected Indore and two other airports from the western region for fast tracking of development works as part of the overall image makeover of the airports. The airports have been selected based on number of daily flights and passenger traffic.

The development works that have been proposed for Indore airport include re-carpeting of the runway, building a parallel taxi way, expansion of car park and launch of domestic cargo services.
