A detailed plan has been formulated in consonance with eight key areas identified by the central government for development of Smart Cities. The development will provide a major boost to the local economy and aid ecological conservation and balance.

“A systematic development of habitat is being undertaken to incorporate the concept of Smart Building and Green Building norms. Some of the unique facilities provided in these dwelling units would be rainwater harvesting, centralised garbage disposal system, solar water heater, solar security lights, underground electric cabling, LED lighting system, provision of LPG through pipelines, prepaid electricity and water meters, waste disposal chutes, passenger and service lift etc,” defence spokesperson Lt Col Manish Ojha said.

He said that the health of troops and families is given high priority. “A state-of-the-art military hospital is being developed. A Central Sports Complex is being constructed which will boast of Astroturf hockey ground synthetic volleyball courts, synthetic basketball courts, athletics track, tennis courts, indoor badminton courts, squash courts and state-of-the-art gymnasium. It will also have an auditorium with a capacity of 1200 people, a state of the art shopping complex and Sainik Institute located in the middle of the station for easy accessibility,” said Lt Col Ojha.

Special attention has been given to preserve and develop ecological balance. A special ecology force is engaged which is mandated to plant one lakh trees every year. The station has already developed a herbal garden, which is one of its kind in the entire district. Five check dams have been constructed to harvest rainwater. This has ensured availability of adequate fodder and which is attracting various wildlife species to the station like eagles, falcons, blackbuck, chinkara, desert fox, wild boards and partridges. They can be seen moving freely in the safe and secure environs of the station.

The Jaisalmer Military Station is going to be a role model for the development of smart cities. The development of the station has already provided a major boost to the local economy creating new business opportunities. It will also be a unique model of self-reliance and sustainable development in complete harmony with nature preserving the ecological balance, Ojha added.
