On Saturday, Mumbai ATS chief Rakesh Maria confirmed to the media that Abdullah was seen in Mumbai a few days ago.

There had been reports that Abdullah was extorting money from businessmen in Mumbai and Kolkata on behalf of Indian Mujahideen founder Amir Reja Khan. But NIA inspector general Lokenath Behera denied any Kolkata connection in the recent Mumbai blasts.

Maria’s claim has forced both the ATS and NIA to launch a nationwide manhunt for Abdullah, who hails from Beniapukur in south Kolkata, as does Khan.

Amir Reja Khan’s elder brother Asif Reja Khan was involved in the abduction of shoe baron Partha Pratim Roy Burman. He was arrested and died in an encounter at Rajkot in 2001.
