The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing the Ranaghat rape and robbery case has submitted the chargesheet on Monday against five of the nine-member gang and has indicated it will submit a supplementary one against the rest when they are able to pinpoint who committed the rape.
The chargesheet was submitted on the 88th day after CID made its first arrest on March 26 from Mumbai and Habra in Bengal.
The sleuths made their first arrest on March 26. They arrested Salim Sheikh from Mumbai and Gopal Sarkar from Habra of North 24 parganas.
Sarkar was arrested for giving shelter to the criminals before committing the crime.
In the wee hours of March 14, a gang of criminals entered the Convent of Jesus and Mary High School at Ranaghatin Nadia and besides robbing Rs8 lakh, one of them also raped a 71-year-old missionary. Later four more, including Milan Sarkar the kingpin of the gang and Nazrul Islam
alias Noju, the prime suspect of the rape, were also arrested.
“We have submitted the chargesheet against five persons. Later we will submit a supplementary chargesheet against Noju (the suspected rapist) and others when we catch them,” said a CID officer. “We have collected the blood samples of the rest except Noju to conduct serological test to confirm who is the rapist. We will slap appropriate sections when we are able to zero in on the rapist,” added the officer on Monday.
