“It was an improper act of the police,” said the Bengal Chief Minister speaking to reporters at Writers’ Buildings on Monday. “I have asked the police commissioner to apologise to the intellectuals for Sunday’s police action on them.”

He said the police took action as a group of activists belonging to the Trinamool Congress and Congress suddenly joined the rally by the intellectuals.

“I have spoken to many of the intellectuals today. I will also speak to Sankha Ghosh. I know many intellectuals who are doing such work in protest against the Nandigram issue have Leftist background. I hope they will come back to our fold,” he added.

The chief minister congratulated foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee for sending CRPF to Nandigram. “I have also spoken to the Prime Minister and Home Minister Shivraj Patil yesterday on the Nandigram issue.”
