The health department headed by chief minister Mamata Banerjee has directed that an inquiry be conducted to probe the deaths of the infants. The inquiry report will be sent to the chief minister at the state secretariat Writers’ Buildings on Monday.
The hospital superintendent Dr Dilip Pal said that most of the babies were brought to the hospital from districts in a critical state with low birth weight and infections.
Five babies died in the hospital on Sunday. Three more deaths of newborns were reported on Monday.
Bereaved parents and relatives of the deceased, blocked the road in front of the hospital on Sunday evening bringing to the fore, charges of negligence in treatment of the patients.
