Fifteen fire engines are fighting the blaze which first started at a medicine store in the Mehta building, fire brigade officials said.

As the fire is proving tough to control, arrangement is being made to use foam. All senior fire officials, including DG, Fire Services, and senior police officers, have rushed to the area.

A fire brigade official said, "We are not sure, but perhaps some people are trapped in the building."

On January 12 this year, a devastating fire had singed the Kasiram building, where the Nandaram market was located, destroying property worth nearly Rs 500 crore.

In the last five months, the city saw at least 12 big or small fires including the one in a departmental store at Sodepur in North 24-Parganas district which claimed 13 lives.
