Kanai Murmu was abducted late on Sunday from Shalpatra village in West Midnapore district by a group of six unidentified Maoist rebels. The locals found his body near the Kapatkata canal.

"We've already begun investigation into the case," a police officer said.

In another incident, a group of armed Maoist guerrillas ransacked a local Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader's house in Purulia district on Sunday night.

The incident took place at Serenghetu village when the rebels set Chandra Shekhar Layer's house on fire and injured him severely, police said.
