The incident took place at Titagarh town in North 24 Parganas on the fringes of Kolkata. The accused, Mohammad Shamim, had been arrested Wednesday on charges of robbery.

"Shamim, an undertrial prisoner lodged at Titagarh police station, escaped on Thursday while he was being taken to the prison van. He was supposed to be produced at a district court in the afternoon," district police superintendent Supratim Sarkar told reporters.

Sarkar said investigations have started on how the prisoner managed to escape from police custody.
