Gaysi Family, a popular gay blog in the city is organising the fifth edition of their community event, Dirty Talk. The open mic night that will take place at The Barking Deer, Lower Parel, tonight (September 14), will see performances by both professional and amateur artistes who want to voice their support towards the LGBT community.
This time, the night will focus on pressing issues that the community currently faces. “We wanted to specifically throw light on the sexual abuse of men and transphobia (dislike of or prejudice against transsexual or transgender people). Even our posters show LGBT activists Harish Iyer and Urmi Jadav sporting superhero capes. These people are not only survivors, but they have done their bit to fight for the cause,” says MJ, one of the organisers, who further believes that such events will only help in the sensitisation of the issues facing LGBT members.
Ask them if booking venues or making other arrangements for shows like these have ever proved to be difficult and MJ explains, “Fortunately, we have never faced any problems. Some people want to help, but they are afraid of getting into trouble themselves. This is because they are not aware of the law, they don’t know that they need no special permission to host a queer party. It’s just like any other party.”
Tonight’s show features 10 performances — five by well-known artistes and groups like Ministry Of Schtick, among others, and five by amateur artistes who were selected by the Gaysi Family in August.
