Lok Sabha elections 2019: Congress looks to wrest Patiala from AAP
Former Union minister Preneet Kaur of the Congress is hoping to wrest the seat she has won in 1999, 2004 and 2009. She lost to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Dharamvira Gandhi in 2014 by over 20,000 votes.
As many as 67% voters turned out to vote as polling was held for Patiala along with 12 other Lok Sabha seats in Punjab in the last phase of the national polls on Sunday. All of the state’s 13 seats polled on May 19.

Preneet Kaur is the wife of current Punjab chief minister Capt. Amrinder Singh.
Gandhi, who has since been ousted from the AAP, has floated his Nawan Punjab Party. AAP has fielded Neena Mittal while former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra is Shiromani Akali Dal’s candidate for the Patiala seat.
Patiala has been a Congress stronghold. The party has won the seat 10 out of total 16 times.
Unemployment, poor civic amenities, and skewed industrial growth have been among the major poll issues in the constituency.
