Three days after a Congress MLA’s convoy was attacked, a zila panchayat member of Rae Bareli on Friday alleged that she was held captive to prevent her from participating in the floor test against zila panchayat chairman Awadesh Pratap Singh on Tuesday.
The member, Nirmala Devi, alleged that the aides of Awadesh and his brother MLC Dinesh Pratap Singh kept her in captivity between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon at the residence of the MLC in Rae Bareli.
Dinesh, who recently quit Congress, is the BJP candidate from Rae Bareli. He is contesting against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Devi said she was released only after the floor test was put off by the authorities after she and other members failed to turn up for the exercise.
She claimed that the no-confidence motion against Awadesh was mooted by her and 30 other members. The MLC and his brother were earlier accused of attacking Congress MLA Aditi Singh’s convoy twice at Bacchrawa toll plaza and Harchandpur on Lucknow-Allahabad highway in Rae Bareli on Tuesday. At least 10 people were arrested by the police in connection with the two separate cases of kidnapping and attempt to murder registered against the MLC and his aides at Bacchrawa and Harchandpur police stations. Devi said she had sent a written complaint to SP Rae Bareli Sunil Kumar Singh narrating the entire event on Wednesday but police did not register FIR in the matter.
Police officials, however, said an FIR related to woman’s kidnapping was registered on Tuesday itself on the complaint of her husband Jageshwar Yadav.
In the FIR, the MLC and his unidentified aides have been named.
Police said the FIR against the MLC and his unidentified aides had already been lodged on the complaint of Jageshwar and the allegations mentioned in the woman’s fresh application will be included during the course of investigation. The woman’s husband claimed his wife was kidnapped when she was out to visit her relative Anil Yadav’s residence at around 8 pm on Monday. He said he was informed about his wife’s kidnapping over phone on the basis of which he approached the police to register the FIR but came to know about the real sequence of events when his wife was freed from captivity on Tuesday. He said his wife was kidnapped and held captive at Dinesh Pratap Singh’s residence.
Six armed assailants accompanied by two personnel in police uniform had kidnapped her. She was beaten up and threatened with dire consequences.
People associated with the MLC have rejected the allegations, claiming it as a conspiracy to malign his and his brothers’ image.
