Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has kicked up another controversy by suggesting that soldiers sexually mistreat locals in parts of the country.

Azam has claimed that his statement was misinterpreted.

“At some places female militants took away private parts of soldiers. They didn't take away their head or limbs but their private parts. The act has such a big message to it...,” Azam is seen saying in a video which is doing rounds on social media.

The said video was recorded when Azam met Samajwadi Party members in Rampur for an Eid Milan function on Tuesday night.

Azam, who is known for his controversial statements, has, however, claimed that his statement was “misinterpreted”. In a written statement, his media in charge has claimed that the said statement was made in reference to a moist attack in Jharkhand earlier this year. “It was widely reported in newspapers and television that female terrorists of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha mutilated the dead bodies of (CRPF) soldiers and took away their private parts,” reads the statement adding, Azam has never tried to harm the morale of the Indian Army.

His media manager Fasahat Ali Shanu while talking to HT said, “The news about Azam Khan speaking against Indian soldiers is untrue and politically motivated. Television channels are only showing a part of the full video without even giving any reference,” Shanu said.

In another video of the Tuesday meeting accessed by Hindustan Times, Azam can be heard criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government for its failure to control violence against Muslims in the country.

BJP demands action against Azam

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav should act against Azam Khan for making a controversial remark against soldiers.

“Khan is mentally bankrupt. He must get himself treated at a lunatic asylum and the SP should make clear what action would it initiate against him,” BJP spokesman Rakesh Tripathi said.
