After openly criticising the Rampur district magistrate for ordering an FIR against local Samajwadi Party (SP) members, Senior party leader Azam Khan said a ‘jail bharo andolan’ would be launched if SP leaders were arrested. Khan said this during a public meeting on Tuesday and a video of the speech has since been widely shared on the social media.

The DM of Rampur, Shiv Sahay Awasthi, had reportedly written to the superintendent of police to register an FIR against SP workers who had protested on the collectorate compound on December 7. The FIR was registered on Sunday and the move has not gone down well with the party.

Bahut galat jagah haanth dala hai collector sahab...SP ke karyakartaon pe FIR likhwane ka apko koi haq nahi tha (You have meddled in the wrong place collector...you had no right to order FIR against SP workers),” Khan can be heard saying in the video on social media.

The crowd responds to his speech with a big round of applause. In the 20-minute-long video, Khan can also be heard criticising the district magistrate on several occasions. He called the DM ‘khanan mafia’ (mining mafia) and ‘lakdi mafia’ (wood mafia) and went to add that he would raise a query about the DM’s source of income post assuming power after a gap of four years.

When contacted for his comment, the DM said, “Officials are reviewing the video of the event and if anything objectionable is found, we will take action against the individual concerned.”

Meanwhile, Khan said that “everything said by him during the speech was correct”. “I just exercised my right to freedom of speech,” he added.

After the speech, SP members in Rampur have started sending letters written in blood to the DM and chief minister Yogi Adityanath that criticise the FIR against party workers.

The said FIR is against 40 SP workers including Khan’s close aide and media coordinator Fasahat Ali Shanu. They have been charged with obstructing the work of government officials, issuing threats and creating a ruckus on the collectorate premises. A police team is investigating the matter.
