Kiran was playing when the gate fell on her, they said. She was rushed to a hospital where she died while undergoing treatment.

Officials said the gate had become weak after heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning.

Kiran used to stay near Lok Bhawan with her mother Amita who was employed as a labourer in the under-construction portion of the building.

Construction work in the Lok Bhawan building started under the previous Samajwadi party regime, said officials. The Rs 602-crore building, which has come up in 6.3 acres land, was inaugurated by former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav in October, 2016.

The building houses the chief minister’s office where cabinet and other meetings are held.
