Drug addiction can be combated and the best way to do so would be to induce grassroots level participation of the public at large, said speakers at the seminar organised to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Rai Umanath Bali auditorium on Wednesday.
“Every citizen of the country has the responsibility to curb this vicious cycle of drugs and rehabilitate the addicts,” said of Narcotics Control Bureau superintendent KP Tiwari, presiding over the function. Tiwari said citizens should take it upon themselves as a social obligation to aid the government in eradicating substance abuse.
Assistant professor of psychology at Lucknow University Archana Shukla gave a presentation on alcoholism and its adverse effects on the lives of the patients and their families. As she spoke, she emphasised the need for societal changes, like removing the stigma from those who refuse to indulge in alcohol. A part of a research and counselling committee, she said research shows that alcoholism can also be a result of genetic factors, however unbelievable the theory may sound.
National Cadet Corps’ 64 UP Battalion head AP Singh and former Prasar Bharti Foundation director Prabhu Jhingran were also present during the event.
United Nations’ International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is commemorated every year on June 26. The seminar on this occasion was organised by non-profit organisation Disha, which works for de-addiction and rehabilitation of drug addicts. The aim was to drive home the message that illicit drugs pose a danger to society; mobilise public support and inspire people to act against drug abuse.
