Moreover, the service helped in sensitising people about several issues like road safety, reckless driving and women safety.

The service helped in resolving nearly 92 per cent of the 2.25 lakh complaints received from the 75 districts of the state on the UP Police Twitter handle @Uppolice.

“Total 2,25,858 complaints were received on twitter but after initial probe only 79,769 complaints were such where any police intervention was required,” said ASP Rahul Srivastava, state police spokesman and in-charge of social media cell.

Srivastava said the twitter service had even helped in improving the police image and increasing direct interaction with general public with over 3.09 lakh followers. He said the service also helped in sensitising people over issues like women safety and fatal video games like Bluewhale Challenge. Besides, it helped in spreading awareness about over speeding and drunken driving, traffic and road safety norms, and cyber security, he emphasised.

He said of the total complaints 434 FIRs were registered and action was taken against 300 police personnel. Srivastava said the action against police personnel was over corruption, misbehaviour and negligence and included registration of FIRs against cops in 18 complaints and around 90 cops were suspended. At least 22 were transferred to police lines and inquiry was ordered against 170 personnel, he added.

The ASP said Noida, Ghaziabad, Bareilly and Varanasi were best on initiating action after getting direction through Twitter Seva while response of Balrampur, Faizabad and Shahjahpur was not appreciable.

He said the top three districts from where actionable tweets were received are Lucknow (around 8039 complaints), Noida (6883) and Ghaziabad (4966) while Siddarthnagar (183), Chitrakoot (200) and Amroha (201) were among lowest actionable tweets.
