An 18-year-old woman of Moradabad was allegedly abducted and gang raped by five men for over two months, said the police on Tuesday. A police team recovered her on Monday evening from the house where she was allegedly being held captive and an investigation was initiated in the matter.
“The woman was forcefully held at a house in the Surya Nagar colony of Katghar area. She was recovered by a raid party at 4 pm on Monday,” said circle officer(CO) of civil lines, Raees Ahmed, who is heading the investigation.
According to the police complaint lodged by the woman’s family, one Rakesh Kumar, who was known to the victim, took her to a house in Kanshiram Colony. Four days later, she was shifted to a house in Surya Nagar, where allegedly Rakesh and his friends -- Babloo Singh, Parveen Singh, Ravindra Singh and Saurabh Pal gang-raped her.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered an FIR against the five accused and charged them with abduction (362) and gang rape (376 D) and under other sections of the Indian Penal Code(IPC). Police have also charged the accused under the SC/ST Act.
The woman was sent for medical examination on Tuesday. Investigators said they were waiting for the medical report to add further charges in the FIR.
Reportedly, the woman went missing from her house near the loco-shed area of Moradabad on December 4. Her family members lodged a missing complaint on December 7, but the police failed to trace her. Eventually, the investigators sought the help of a mobile surveillance team and recovered her on the basis of the last recorded location of her cell phone.
The team managed to arrest one of the accused, Ravindra Singh, from his residence on Monday. The others are absconding. “We are conducting raids to arrest the remaining accused,” said the CO. The local surveillance team and intelligence unit is assisting them in the search.
On the other hand, the family members of accused Rakesh Kumar met the CO on Tuesday. They claimed that the woman was living at the Surya Nagar residence by her own free will.
“She (the woman) was in a relationship with my son. They eloped and were living at the house,” a male relative of Rakesh told HT over phone. He added that Rakesh and the woman were planning to marry in court. “The rape case was lodged under pressure from her family members,” he said.
Meanwhile, the woman’s family members refused to comment on this.
