The father of a girl raped by self-styled godman Asaram has vowed to continue fighting for justice if the defence files an appeal before the high court.
“This verdict is not the end of our struggle. I will continue to pursue the case even if Asaram takes it to the high court,” he said on Thursday, a day after the spiritual leader was awarded life imprisonment by a Jodhpur court for rape as well as other offences.
The 54-year-old man, who was once a devout follower of Asaram, lives with his family in western Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district. Police protection accorded to them was heightened in the wake of the verdict.
The family was provided security on earlier occasions too, when three important witnesses in the case were killed allegedly by an Asaram supporter. “We received innumerable threats over the years. They even tried to malign my family and distributed pamphlets calling me a liar, but we continued our fight,” the father said.
He said there were times when things seemed hopeless, and they were almost compelled to end the fight. “But my conscience and the strength of my daughter helped me on,” he said.
The girl, who was only 16 when she was raped by Asaram, is also trying to lead a normal life. Keen on pursuing her education, she has now enrolled in a graduate course, the father said.
The family did not allow mediapersons to interact with the girl, citing security reasons.
Meanwhile, the Shahjahanpur administration said it was leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety of the girl and her family. “Strict prohibitory orders have been put in place across the district until Monday. Ample police protection has been provided to the family. We are still monitoring the situation,” said district magistrate Amrit Tripathi.
