Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the long-awaited Mahesra over bridge at Sonauli-Gorakhpur National highway (NH80), on Monday. The bridge would connect Gorakhpur and other east UP districts to Nepal. It will also become a major route for people going from Gorakhpur to Balrampur, Maharajganj and Gonda.

The bridge was one among 35 projects worth Rs 750 crores, which are being inaugurated while foundation stones are being laid for others by the chief minister during his two-day visit to Gorakhpur.

Addressing the gathering, Yogi flayed the earlier governments of promoting corruption and patronizing criminals. “Mahesra overbridge is a live example of corruption, inaction and loot of government exchequer by non-BJP governments that pushed the state backward for vested interests,” said Yogi said while inaugurating the overbridge and laying the foundation stone of broadening work of Mohripur-Sherpur Chamraha at a cost of Rs 564 crore.

Yogi made this statement in the backdrop of delayed constriction of the over bridge, the proposal for which was accepted at a cost of Rs 14 crores in 2009. The Central government allocated funds in 2014 but construction had been pending since then.

The chief minister further said it was due to corruption by previous governments that when the BJP government came to power in state it received a legacy of potholed roads, poor power supply and lawlessness. “24x7 power supply was limited to just 4-5 districts in the state. When we came to power, we decided not to tolerate this injustice and on April 25 last year, the state government decided to provide uninterrupted power of 24 hours to district headquarters, 20 hours to tehsils and 16 hours to villages. We also decided to flush out criminals from UP and directed the administration and police to deal with them strictly,” said CM who assured people that his government was committed to provide security to 22 crores state residents.

He told the gathering that national highway projects worth Rs 564 crores were being constructed in east UP and another Rs 3064 crores was earmarked for repair and broadening of highways and road networks in east UP.

Later, the CM went to Jangal Kaudia block where he unveiled statue Ramapati Yadav, former village head and attended a conference of gram pradhans at Gorakhpur club before travelling back to Gorakhnath temple for night stay. Yogi inaugurated some projects and also laid foundation stones for others that would cost Rs 150 crores to the state exchequer.
