Christopher Robin, now an overworked Londoner, gets a chance to do some serious thinking when he meets his childhood friend Pooh Bear and sets out to help him find other lost woodland creatures.

  • Rating: 3.5 / 5

Based on the series of perennially popular Winnie the Pooh stories by the British fantast AA Milne, Christopher Robin is a family-friendly blend of live-action characters and digitally rendered anthropomorphic animals.

The titular human (Ewan McGregor, endearing) is an overworked Londoner who is ordered to stay back at office for the weekend while his wife (Hayley Atwell) and daughter (Bronte Carmichael) head to their country cottage. Relief from the drudgery of an uneventful existence comes in the form of the scruffy Pooh Bear (voiced in honey tones by Jim Cummings).

The movie gets you thinking about whether you can balance your youthful innocence with the disillusionment of adult life.

It seems Robin’s furry friend needs help finding other lost woodland creatures. As for the World War 2 veteran, the search provides a chance to restore the balance between his youthful innocence and disillusioned adult life.

The film boasts a lush visual palette reminiscent of director Mark Forster’s 2004 Peter Pan fable, Finding Neverland. It is also a joy to make the acquaintance of the menagerie of animals that includes a donkey (Brad Garrett), piglet (Nick Mohammed), owl (Toby Jones) and an unusually bouncy tiger.

A wondrous childlike odyssey, Christopher Robin is recommended both for the young and the young at heart.
