A man who stabbed a woman on the stomach and then himself on Tuesday, has regained consciousness in hospital a day after, but the woman continues to be in a critical condition, police said. According to the police, the man wanted to marry the woman, but her parents rejected his proposal.
The accused, Akash Pande, 27, barged inside the 26-year-old woman’s home and stabbed her in front of her family, police said. Pande then stabbed himself with the same knife. The family rushed the profusely bleeding two to a governmental hospital, the police said.
“She sustained intestinal injuries, while he sustained abdominal injuries,” said Sachin Patil, deputy commissioner of police, zone 6. No note has been recovered from Pande.
According to the police, Pande works with a private firm while the girl had completed a computer course.
The two are neighbours at Tulshetpada in Bhandup. Pande has been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 307 (attempt to murder).

The Bhandup police recorded the statements of the woman’s family.
“We will record the statements of the accused in this regard,” said the officer. The police have recovered the knife and will also question friends of the two. “We have not found any criminal record of the accused,” said the officer.
