A 36-year-old executive manager of a housekeeping company was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a 34-year-old woman staffer for the past two years.

Mumbai police said as the accused had threatened the complainant of dire consequences, she had not approached the police till May 30. Following investigation, the executive manager was arrested last week.

The complainant in her statement to the police said she has been working as a trainer at the company since March 2016. “Initially, he wouldn’t come to work, but later when he started showing up, he would pass lewd comments at me, which I ignored.”

The police said the complainant claimed that after a year of passing comments, the accused started staring at her constantly. “He would keep staring at me and make me uncomfortable. He would push me on purpose while crossing each other and pretend it was a mistake,” she said in her statement.

One day, the accused asked the complainant to call him to the training room when she was “alone”, said the police. He even started following her after work and kept trying to speak to her, she said. In one instance, the accused manager even banged the washroom door while she was inside and fled. “On March 8, there was a meeting during which I went to the washroom and suddenly someone just banged the door from outside and left. After I inquired, my colleagues told me it was the same executive manager,” said the complainant.

Later, when he touched her inappropriately one day, she decided to file a complaint but got scared. “I yelled at him following which he threatened he would defame me. On April 8, I even went to Sion police station but left as I got scared,” she said in her complaint. After consulting her husband, the woman finally approached the Sion police on May 30, following which the case was registered. Senior inspector Mrudula Lad from Sion police station said, “The accused was arrested and is out on bail. We have verified the facts and are investigating the case.”

The accused has been booked under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354 (D) (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
