A week after Air India passengers complained of bed bugs in their business class seats, the national carrier has stated that the infestation was due to the current weather conditions.

Saumya Shetty, who was travelling to Mumbai from Newark on July 18 was attacked by the bugs and suffered bites all over her body. She tweeted about her experience and wrote to the airline as well.

Speaking to HT, Shetty said, “It has taken a lot of effort to get the airline to pay attention to my grievance. I visited their Nariman Point office on Tuesday, only to learn that my complaints were not being paid attention to. It is only after my visit that I received an apology mail.”

In a compensation email sent to Shetty by the airline, Air India stated: “Our engineering department has assured that the rigorous fumigation of all the aircraft are done at frequent and regular intervals. Infestation may have happened due to the current weather conditions.”

Shetty said that blaming the weather for the bugs made no sense. Air India has offered to refund 75% of her fare and apologised for the inconvenience.
