Five people were killed in a freak accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Sunday evening when a private bus caught fire in a tunnel near Kamshet where the lights went off and a car then rammed into it in the dark.
Traffic piled up on the expressway after the accident, the police said.
According to the police, all the dead were in the car, on their way home to Navi Mumbai from Pune.
Police identified them as Bhagini Deshmukh (60), Shraddha Nilesh Patil (19), Dattatreya Deshmukh (63), Rakhi Nilesh Patil (38), and car driver Deepak.
Two-year -old Om Deshmukh had a miraculous escape. According to the police, his parents are being treated in Talegaon General Hospital.
The police said a fire broke out in the rear of the luxury bus and the lights in the tunnel went off because of the smoke — the security system switches off electricity supply in case of fire and the smoke must have triggered the alarm.
The police said the car was speeding and the driver must have been caught unawares in the dark, ramming into the rear of the bus.
Earlier in the morning too, traffic on the expressway was disrupted when a truck carrying eggs rammed into a crane, also near Kamshet, the police said.
