Four dacoits have been arrested for entering the residence of Sangli’s superintendent of police (SP) and trying to make away with Sandalwood trees in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

As per Sangli police, the accused quietly entered the bungalow premises around 3.45 am on Wednesday and began cutting the tree. However, the noise alerted the guards, who spotted the suspects and immediately called for back up after which a team of local crime branch patrolling the nearby area reached the spot.
A police official said the cops and the accused then entered a scuffle. The police managed to overpower the armed dacoits and took them to the nearby Vishrambag police station. The police have recovered weapons which are used in tree cutting from the accused.
The case has been handed over to the local crime branch for further probe and the police are questioning the accused to find out what made them enter a residence of the police chief in the district.
Superintendent of police (Sangli) Dattatraya Shinde, while confirming the incident, told HT that they have arrested the accused who entered the bungalow and tried to cut the sandalwood trees.
A case under Section 395 (dacoity) of the Indian Penal code (IPC) has been registered at the Vishrambag Police Station.
