Dahi handi prize money drops, but excitement remains high in Thane

While organisers across the city kept dahi handi celebrations low-key, there was no dip in the excitement of govindas.

A case in point could be the Jai Jawan Jai Kisan Govinda Mandal from Jogeshwari that tried to make nine tiers at two events – Sankalp Pratishthan and MNS event at Bhagwati ground in Thane.

The group however failed at both the events.

Another group, Shiv Sai Govinda mandal from Borivli that made nine tiers last year despite the ban will attempt the feat this time too.

Milind Kolwankar, president of the mandal, said, “This year there was no clarity on whether we can hold dahi handi events. The court’s decision came in at a time when govindas were almost done with their practice sessions. This affected their excitement.”

“The prize money, too, is dwindled. We have to spend a lot on practising for nine tiers. The prize money needs to be worth the effort,” he said.
