Drunk autorickshaw driver stalks woman, passes lewd comments

A 31-year-old rickshaw driver, Mohamed Shakil Memon, 31, was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly passed lewd comments at a 24-year-old nurse in Oshiwara. Police said he was drunk at the time of the incident.

According to the police, the complainant works with a hospital which is close to her home. When the woman was returning home from work, Memon, a resident of Behrampada, offered to drop her and take her for a ride, said police. Scared, the woman ignored him, but Memon continued passing lewd comments.

The woman continued to walk ahead till she saw a male friend who lived in her locality. She went up to him and told him about the ordeal. When the friend confronted him, Memon fled in his autorickshaw.

The woman and the friend followed the vehicle till it got stuck in traffic near Behrampada chowki. The man along with passers-by caught hold of Memon and beat him up.

The police control room was alerted, after which Memon was arrested.

An FIR has been registered under section 354 A (sexual harassment), 354 D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and 185 (Driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs) of Motor Vehicle Act.

A police officer said, “The accused was drunk. We produced him before a magistrate court, which remanded him in judicial custody. He has been granted bail.”
