Four arrested for robbing people on railway stations in Mumbai

The gang has been using this modus operandi for the past three years and have looted travellers on railway platforms where there are gold and diamond markets nearby, like Malad, Grant Road, LT Marg and Pydhonie.

The railway police arrested four men from a 10-member gang called Jadughar Company on Monday. The gang would steal valuables from train passengers and vanish.

Hitesh Shevantilal Wakaria, a resident of Malad, was the latest victim. On July 3, he was carrying his deceased mother’s jewellery worth Rs12 lakhs to Zhaveri Bazaar when the gang intercepted him at Malad Railway station. Before this, the Borivli Government Railway Police had registered two cases against the gang on July 4 and 11.

After Wakaria’s complaint, Bandra GRP crime branch officers recovered CCTV footage of the station and saw Wakaria being surrounded by the gang. Baba Chavan, an officer with the crime branch, said, “We then saw two men, on Wakaria’s sides lift their laptop bags and block his vision. Within seconds then a third man snatched his bag and fled. In a moment, the group dispersed,” said Chavan.

After the case was registered, the branch officers got information that the gang was gathering outside Malad station on August 8. They laid a trap and caught Sachin Kunchikarve, who led them to three others. Police have recovered gold worth Rs5 lakh from the arrested accused. The leader of the gang and five others are still wanted.
