Twenty women MPs from across the country visited Byculla jail on Thursday to interact with inmates and enquired about the alleged custodial killing of Manjula Shetye. The Parliamentary Empowerment of Women Committee also met senior jail officials.
The visiting team, which was headed by Bijoya Chakravarty from Assam, included NCP’s Vandana Chavan and Supriya Sule, BJP’s Raksha Khadse and DMK’s MK Kanimozhi.
Jail officials allegedly assaulted Shetye to death on June 23. The post-mortem reports revealed there were 13 to 16 contusions on her body. A complainant, who is also a witness in the case, told the police Shetye was brutally assaulted for complaining about two eggs and five pieces of pav (bread) missing from morning ration.
The death triggered a violent protest and some 200 prisoners were booked for rioting, assaulting and mischief with fire.
Six jail officials have been arrested in the case.
