MumbaiThe state government on Wednesday accorded the status of a ‘Planning Authority’ to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) in order to facilitate the speedy implementation of affordable housing schemes. This move to make Mhada a nodal agency will result in the speedy redevelopment of 114 Mhada layouts spread across Mumbai and cut down red-tapeism. The Mhada has layouts across Mumbai in areas such as Malad, Kalachowki, Goregaon, Bandra, Santacruz and Dahisar. Read more: Mhada to use 200 acre prime land in Pune to house lower income groups“In case of projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which are being implemented by Mhada, joint venture of Mhada or Mhada as a nodal agency for Public-Private Partnership Projects, the government of Maharashtra is of opinion that for speedy creation of affordable houses, Mhada should be permitted to exercise powers of Planning Authority,” read the circular issued by the state on Wednesday. The move is aimed to fulfill the government’s agenda of Housing For all by 2022. The move will curb red-tapeism as it will allow Mhada to carry out its functions without running around to seek approvals from various authorities, such as state government departments or the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). With the special authority status, Mhada can be the planning authority and undertake responsibilities for basic amenities within the notified area. Mhada had written a letter on May 15 this year along with the list of its 114 layouts requesting the state to make it a nodal agency. The housing department has already given the green light and now even the urban development department has seconded it. Currently, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has the special planning authority status for some areas in Mumbai, including the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).
